Day 23, 16th July. Stopping Turning day

July 16, 2012 by janem213

Have taken the incubator off its turning cradle and kept the eggs upright inside. The temperature has been lowered half a degree to 37.0 and the humidity upped to 65. Not long to wait now!

Once hatched, the ducklings stay in the incubator for 12 hours to dry off. They are then transferred to a ‘broody’, their home for the next couple of weeks. I’m using a 3 foot wide aquarium I bought on ebay (for the bargain price of £17). I’m cleaning it well this evening ready for the ducklings. A heat lamp will be suspended at one end to keep them warm. They’ll have food and water, and on the floor I’ll be using puppy house training pads initially – I’d use sawdust but very young ducklings can confuse it with food and eat it. Neither must they be on a very smooth surface as it affects their leg development. The puppy pads are very absorbent and can be frequently changed. Lou and Carl are lending/have lent me the bits and pieces I need and we’re buying some food – they’ve some more chicks hatching soon  : )

You’re not counting them before they’ve hatched, Lou?!! I’m trying not to, taking one step at a time. The egg pipping today feels like one huge step for duck-kind : )
