Today is Day 28, the day they will start hatching!
I was delighted when I got home from work yesterday to find 8 of the 15 eggs had externally pipped!! – usually it’s just one or two. The external pip (EP) is where the duckling or other baby bird breaks through the shell making a little star shaped protrusion:
(Not the best photo but hopefully you get the idea. The duckling has pushed a little flap of shell outwards…)
They are also taking turns to go Cheep Cheep Cheep! from inside their shells. If I go Cheep Cheep Cheep! then they Cheep Cheep Cheep! back : ) I don’t think I could never tire of this…and the main events are yet to occur!
For now 8 ducklings are having a rest summoning up the strength to do the hardest job of their lives… Chicks, having a sharp pointy thing on the front of their faces (their beak), have a much easier time hatching. Ducklings and goslings have one tiny ‘egg tooth’ to do all the work. It can take them 48 hours or more from the external pip… slowly unzipping the shell from within… still unzipping… and still unzipping…having a rest… unzipping some more………until they finally flip the top of the egg off and struggle out of the shell, lying there wet and exhausted, finally hatched…
